Pictures in this collection were sized for the connections of their time, and that shaped what the jokes could be. An image had to work at a width that fitted a small screen and a file size that would arrive over a dial-up line, so the composition was blunt: one subject, high contrast, large type, nothing that depended on fine detail.
The consequence is visible in the archive itself. Many entries exist only as a thumbnail, and enlarging one now produces a soft, blocky picture that looks like a fault but is the original. Where only a small copy survived, it is shown at its archived size rather than stretched. Pictures in this collection circulated by email and on forums, and the original authors are usually unknown.
