Homemade costumes of transforming robots are an engineering problem wearing a fancy-dress hat. The body has to be light enough to carry, rigid enough to hold a shape, hinged so that panels fold in a fixed order, and vented well enough that the wearer can last the evening. Cardboard and foam board do most of the work; the difficulty is the joints, because every hinge is both a weak point and the thing the whole effect depends on.
Costume contests reward the transformation itself, which is why the winning builds tend to be simpler than the elaborate static ones. Anything that has to change shape in front of an audience has to survive being handled. This entry is kept as part of the image archive; the photographer is not recorded.
